High-Rise Syndrome, Is Your Cat Safe?
High-rise syndrome was first described in the 1970s in cats living in New York City. The term refers to a collection of injuries commonly seen in cats (and dogs), including:
- Chest and lung trauma
- Head and facial injuries
- Limb fractures
- Internal organ bleeding
With Hong Kong’s many urban areas, cases of high-rise syndrome are unfortunately commonly seen in emergency departments. Cats and dogs are at risk of falling from balconies or windows, especially when they are left open during warmer months.
Keep your animals safe, make sure your windows are kept closed or if left open, they should be screened. Keep your balcony doors closed. Keep furniture away from window ledges and balconies.
